Few figures in African sports embody elegance and excellence the way Rena Wakama does. A former standout player turned history-making coach, Wakama has become a global symbol of ambition, resilience, and women’s empowerment — balancing her radiant presence with a sharp basketball mind.
Early Life & Roots
Born on April 11, 1992 in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Nigerian parents from Okrika in Rivers State, Wakama grew up straddling two worlds. Her dual identity shaped her into a confident leader who proudly represents both her American upbringing and her Nigerian heritage. From an early age, she displayed charisma and focus — qualities that later defined her coaching career.
Playing Career: From Court Star to National Pride
Rena Wakama starred as a guard at Western Carolina (2009–2013) while also studying for a degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
At Western Carolina University, Wakama started 121 games, proving her consistency and toughness on the court. Later, she donned the Nigerian jersey, representing the D’Tigress in AfroBasket tournaments — a moment of pride that deepened her connection to her ancestral home. Her court presence wasn’t just about skill, but also the poise and elegance that made her a natural leader.
In 2019, she added a master’s degree in Business Administration from Manhattan College, underscoring her drive to excel both on and off the court.
The Coaching Rise
Wakama transitioned from player to mentor with the same grace she displayed on the court. At Manhattan College, she quickly rose through the ranks, working first as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations and then as Assistant Coach. Known for her professionalism and style, she earned respect not just for her basketball IQ but also for her ability to inspire young athletes.
In 2023, Wakama broke barriers when she was appointed Head Coach of Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team (D’Tigress) — making history as the first woman to hold the position. At just 31, she led Nigeria to the AfroBasket title, becoming the youngest coach ever to do so.
Global Spotlight: Paris 2024

Her brilliance shone brightest on the world stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she guided Nigeria to the quarterfinals, becoming the first African team ever to reach such heights. Her sharp leadership earned her the honor of FIBA Best Coach of the Tournament, while global media praised not just her tactical genius but also her poise (beauty, confidence, and strength personified as she led her “queens” with pride).
Building on that momentum, Wakama carried the crown into 2025, steering D’Tigress to yet another triumph as they claimed the Women’s AfroBasket Championship once again — cementing her place as a back-to-back history maker.
A Face of Inspiration
Beyond the courts, Wakama has become a role model for young women across Africa and the diaspora. She proves that femininity and power are not opposites — that one can be stylish, graceful, and still command respect at the highest levels of sport.

Her story isn’t just about basketball, it’s about breaking ceilings, redefining leadership, and proving that beauty and substance can coexist in the same powerful woman.
Legacy in Motion
Still in her early 30s, and already doubling as D’Tigress Head Coach and Chicago Sky Assistant Coach, Rena Wakama’s journey is just beginning. Whether courtside in Lagos, Paris, or Chicago, she stands as a beacon of hope for women who dare to dream. Her life reminds us that when elegance meets excellence, the results can inspire generations.
In her Words…
We are always playing for something bigger than ourselves. We are leaving a legacy and we are changing lives and impacting lives. So if we are able to do that, the game is easy.
